On Saturday, both sides agree to finally set up a buffer zone.  Both sides have continued to attack each other near Mariupol and Donetsk.  More than 3,000 people were killed since the beginning of this conflict.

In a report by BBC, they report Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council spokesman Col Andriy Lysenko stated

“artillery and armored vehicles with a caliber greater than 100mm would be moved, but all other units and their weapons would remain in place.”

A cease fire was agreed on by both the Ukrainian government and pro-Russian separatists on September 5th, and that both sides should establish a buffer zone, but both sides still seem to be attacking each other.  Kiev, Ukraine’s capital will not establish a buffer zone until the cease fire happens.  According to a BBC report, U.S. Air Force General Philip Breedlove told reporters

“The situation in Ukraine is not good right now.” “Basically, we have a cease fire in name only” says Breedlove.

August 25th through September 2nd, 2014

The pro-Russian separatists who live on the eastern border of Ukraine have been at war with pro-Kiev troops for some time. They aim to unite Ukraine with Russia once again.  At the end of last week, Russia wanted to help the pro-Russian separatists by sending them supplies to aid them in a "humanitarian effort."  The Russian convoy sat at the border for a week awaiting clearance to move in, but the convoy didn't wait any longer and drove in.

Later on in the week, Ukrainian soldiers were driving the pro-Russian troops back that is until Russian tanks started dominating the battlefield.  In a news story reported by the Telegraph in the UK by Oliphant, R (2014, September 2).

"In a series of counteroffensives on all fronts, the rebel - backed, Ukrainian and Western officials say, by Russian artillery, armor, and regular troops - have reversed the Ukrainian advance, seized their first outlet to the sea, and inflicted a humiliating defeat on the pro-Kiev volunteer battalion."

The pro-Russian troops had taken over key areas like an airport that is close to Luhansk.  This is a town that the Ukrainians held on to for quite some time.  It's almost as if the Ukrainians and Russians are at the brink of an all out war.
